Contour line drawings have been used by artists throughout history as a way to practice technique, study three dimensional forms, and create an illusion of three dimensional space on a flat surface. Many artists have specifically studied hands and feet due to their complexity and the natural foreshortening that occurs. Renaissance artists such as Albrecht Durer and Leonardo da Vinci specifically used contour lines to convey hands and feet within their detailed sketchbooks.

For this assignment, you will  begin by taking an original photograph that includes hands and/or feet. You may include an entire figure, or you may enlarge the hands and feet. Consider how you will arrange your composition, and what you will place in the background. Once you have your photograph, pencil in a very light contour outline. Then, use pencil to wrap lines around the forms so that the lines follow the three dimensional shape of your subject.

Tip: Pretend that there is a string wrapping around your subject, and then draw the string. To practice, you can literally wrap a string around your subject and observe how the lines curve.

VPA 2: Demonstrate an understanding of various composition skills, including the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, through the creation and analysis of artwork.

I can identify, apply, and evaluate strategies of enlarging, cropping, and overlapping, as well as the “Rule of Thirds” in an artwork to create an engaging and dynamic composition.

I can identify, apply, and experiment with artistic structures and guidelines, such as color theory, linear perspective, facial proportion, and landscape composition, with accuracy.

I can identify and apply artistic structures and guidelines, such as color theory, linear perspective, facial proportion, and landscape composition with a few noticeable mistakes.

I can identify compositional strategies of enlarging, cropping, and overlapping, as well as the “Rule of Thirds”, but have yet to use them effectively.
